Did anyone watch the Grammy awards last night? I only saw a teeny bit of it--it was "F*ck You" with Cee-Lo Green and Gwyneth Paltrow. She really screwed it up, but I really enjoyed the whole concept behind it... muppets are sweet!! After the performance ended, I resumed my MCAT studies and continued to ignore any sound that was outside my door.
This morning, I open up Yahoo! (which, again, I should just never do because they don't provide REAL news) and what's all over the homepage?
Garbage about the Grammys. Who was dressed the best? Whose performance was the best? Who stole the show by winning whatever award?
Dammit, who cares? After hearing people shriek excitedly at the television when famous people thank their fans, I decided that the whole concept of celebrities and fangirls is so full of shit. The only reason celebrities are famous is because all of the sheep in America are so willing to give them all of their attention. Oh my gosh, can you believe that Amber from Teen Mom might be a drug addict? OMG, Selma Blair is pregnant! Wow, Willow Smith was wearing this thing and it's so cool!
OH MY GOD, who cares. I can't believe that so much money is involved with this. Obviously, celebs are rich as hell and get paid for whatever they do, whether it's acting, modeling, or channeling their true bitchy selves on talk shows (hello, Tyra). But I can't believe that we spend so much money on them--buying things they endorse, printing news stories about their personal lives, etc. It's pretty ridiculous. We give them all of their power; they really are just ordinary people, like us. It reminds me of those stupid class president elections in grade school. Everyone knew that those were simply a popularity contest; an excellent candidate would not get elected if he had no friends. And then there were those contests for homecoming king and queen, the contests that did not even try to hide the fact that they were popularity contests. I feel like this is the same thing with celebrities. Grammy Awards are just a measure of how popular someone was, right?
I'm not saying that I think the concept behind awarding someone for their hard work is stupid. I just don't think the Grammy awards are what they used to be. Instead of celebrating the wholeness of music, it's just a costume and a popularity contest now. I think it's stupid how people glorify themselves so much. Like seriously, Lady GaGa? Having yourself carried in? Do you think you're a queen or something just because you are suddenly famous? Get a f*cking grip on yourself, for f*ck's sake.
I don't know. It's just saddening that so many people seem so invested in stuff that holds no true meaning.
