My roommate and I are off to class and we see a disturbance in what students here call "The Diag", a giant open area that allows for easy access to the building surrounding it. Instead of the Diag being all open and empty, it is walled off in such a way that you must go around it. What was it walled off with?
Posters of bloodied, unborn fetuses SO large that you couldn't walk past them and miss them.
I was instantly sickened to my stomach. Just google "aborted fetuses" ... I did and I recognized some of those pictures. Bloodied masses with barely distinguishable limbs and fingers. Comparisons of abortions to child abuse, the Rwandan genocide, the Holocaust, and other offensive things. A large photograph of a quarter covered with and blood limbs from aborted fetuses over here and then another disturbing photograph of an aborted fetus next to a picture of the President and his family with a quote of him saying how he wouldn't want his daughters to be punished by a baby if they made mistakes.
I was sickened, but I was also enraged. I understand freedom of speech and all, but I really don't think you have a right to force people (not only students, but even some children and parents walking through the diag were forced to look at that ...) to see things that they don't want to see. And don't even try to tell me that that whole "Warning: Disturbing Images Ahead" sign was useful at all because YOU PURPOSEFULLY blocked the highest traffic pathway at our University because you wanted to MAKE SURE that no one would miss that sh!t.
Even after watching (and hearing) my roommate exclaim about how disgusting this display was, some b!tch asked us whether we think about abortion. My response? "No! Not after I see sh!t like this!"
You know what? I respect people having their own opinions--it's when they try to force them upon me that I really don't like it. Go ahead and be pro-life, but you know what? I'm going to remain pro-choice. Frankly, I'm not quite sure what I would do in such a situation, but I believe that having the freedom to choose makes EVERYBODY happy! Those people who want to choose will do so, and those who are pro-life will stay true to themselves as well! Abortions aren't a new thing--they have been around for centuries. Whether the law says anything about it or not, I'm sure that abortions will continue.
I hate how these protesters say that even if you don't want a baby, you should still carry it to full term. I think that's absurd. That is still a HUGE burden to force upon a woman who may not want to have anything to do with it. No, I should not be forced to put my life on hold for 9 months because of either a mistake or a circumstance.
These terrible protesters are so deluded; they must be thinking that people who believe in abortion just don't care about the topic or the fetuses that are aborted. I can't speak for everybody, but I'll speak on my behalf by saying that that is a complete load of bullsh!t. No one put into that situation would happily abort a fetus. It is a sh!tty situation on either side; either your whole life gets displaced or you displace someone else's. For some it is not a hard choice, for some it might be. Personally, I think that at this age, I would have an abortion because I don't believe I'm ready for parenthood (and on that note, my lifestyle as a medical student in the future would now allow for me to carry a baby anyway ... I just wouldn't want it now). Even so, I would be haunted by that decision for the rest of my life. It would be a terrible circumstance that would follow me forever.
When your freedom of speech disrupts several people to the point of distraction and disgust, I really don't think it should be allowed. It is not appropriate for our college environment, and we are here to be educated. We are not here for any political agendas or whatever else. Absolutely f*cking disgusting. I can't believe a student organization PAID for this sh!t to happen ... AND it's happening tomorrow. I think I might just give the dumba$$ who asks me what I think a piece of my mind.
