My professor unexpectedly ends class 10 minutes early. I exit the building and walk through the empty campus. Making my way to lab, I notice a man in a marine uniform standing patiently in the giant space between buildings, holding a quiet bouquet of red roses. He stands still.
Minutes go by.
A small crowd has gathered around him--everyone nervously waiting for the outcome.
You can tell class has finished because the area is starting to flood with students leaving the buildings and walking to class, a peculiar look on their faces as they do a double take. A solution of confusion and a twinge of hopefulness. The anticipation is building up. The atmosphere comes to a halt.
He walks past me, bouquet still in hand. My head turns of its own volition towards the girl he is walking towards.
Her face EXPLODES into happiness. They share a beautiful embrace and a kiss. As she emerges, her smile glows gorgeously.
"You're such a liar!" she shrieks joyfully.
Applause shatters the scene back into reality. I look back up. The crowd has vanished and people have moved on to their daily lives.

Now, for once I don't think I have anything really b!tchy to say about this. I absolutely cannot STAND chick flicks because I feel like they give off all the wrong messages about relationships and the expectations of men and women. The majority of them show women as being incomplete without a man by her side, and that love is perfect and even though it seems rotten it will always work out magically in the end, and the most people will be left happy.
This is definitely not a match to reality. And perhaps I'm a cynic because love has hurt me several times. Who out there hasn't had a significant other who had significantly hurt them? Women and men alike have the potential to be dirty liars, cheaters, adulterers, etc. Anyone can have their heart broken.
Love had left me hopeless and faithless, and to this very day I find that I haven't fully recovered from that year, that summer, that relationship, that a$$hole.
However, this incident gave me back a glimmer of hope. Beautiful things are actually possible in the real world, and I have to say that my spirits have been (ugh) lifted. :)
A MESSAGE TO MY FEW READERS:
Sorry I haven't been updating lately. The semester has picked up and I don't really like it ... however, I have five posts waiting to be written! All questions, comments, and suggestions are welcomed as long as they are within respectful boundaries.
Thank you.
