... ESPECIALLY on the bus.
Because my house is approximately 1.5 miles away from campus, I try my hardest to catch a ride with my boyfriend or ride the bus to class. Now that winter has started and snow is consistently on the ground, walking to class every morning is not only unappealing but it is also somewhat dangerous. (Ugg-style boots suck. They have NO traction. And mine have started to leak.) So I've gotta catch a specific bus with a route that is close to my house. Oh man, it's public transit time. It's a good thing that it's free for students as long as they have a valid university ID.
One day, I was riding the bus from campus towards my house. I get a strange tickling feeling on my right thigh.
Ah. My phone's ringing. So I pull out my phone, answer it, and then promptly hang up. Why? Because my dad called me without meaning to. Usually our conversations are less than 2 minutes anyway, but this one had no (good) purpose.
I get off the bus, a teeny bit frustrated that I had pulled out my phone for no reason, and walk the rest of the way home. Hands in my pockets, I notice that something is amiss.
Sh!t. Where is my ID?!
(This was a "Sh!t, you just took a picture up my skirt, how dare you!!" face. Kinda related.)
I have lost my student ID twice before--once, it fell out of my back pocket (because any sort of pockets on girls clothing are inherently useless), and another time it had gotten swallowed up by my boyfriend's couch. I hoped that I did not lose it on the bus... because if I did, then how will I ever get it back? Also, each replacement does cost $20, which is not only ridiculous but also quite irritating. $20 for a teeny piece of plastic. It's not like I decided to maul my ID or drop it into a paper shredder on purpose or anything--I simply lost it! Whatever, I suppose there needs to be a consequence for losing such important documentation (besides the fact that all of my identifying information is on it for the world to see?).
I sent out an e-mail to the bus station's central office as soon as I got home. I wait a couple of days, and they e-mail me back saying that (OH MY GOSH) they have my ID!!! So, please come to the office and pick it up on Monday.
Nope. Can't do that. You know why? Because your damned office closes before I'm done with work, class, and taking a final exam. Not to mention the fact that to me, your office is only accessible if I (what a surprise) ride the bus.
Finally, I do get a ride to the office (that Thursday). Then, they tell me that they do not know where my ID is and that there it probably got mailed back to the University. Of course, this is during the time of the year with the COLOSSAL quantity of mail and packages and sh!t for the holidays... which means that I can't even expect it in my mailbox until next year. Okay. Thanks for good recordkeeping and precision. You might have mailed it. Not to mention that the secretary actually laughed in my face, convinced that I had lost it more than 2 weeks ago so it was justified for her to maybe mail it out. Nope. Definitely lost it a week ago (by the time that I came in). She thought I was just some dum-dum student who couldn't keep track of her personal belongings. No offense, lady, but I'm the one in college here.
I wait until school starts. I hear NOTHING. I am so fed up with this by now that I call the office again and demand to know where my ID is. She curtly tells me that it's actually at the office, and that I can come pick it up the next day. -click-
SO IRRITATING.
1)I don't have regular available transportation! This is why I ride the bus!!
2)You, madam, are a b!tch. You told me you mailed it! You couldn't find it the LAST time I was here!
3)They had my ID for literally a month.
I hated that whole situation. Customer service was a HUGE part of that woman's job, being the front desk secretary, and she was TERRIBLE at it. Not only did she disrespect me but she caused me a HUGE inconvenience. Does she not understand that people who *don't* have cars actually ride the bus? Or that I'm a college student and not many of us even have cars?!
The best thing for me is that at the very least, someone turned in my ID. That gave me a little bit of hope. However, people are still b!tches, I guess, and I don't know if anything will ever change that.
